While looking at my reef tank, I noticed my leather coral had fallen off (again) and into a carpet anenome. Don't know how long it had been there, but looks like long enough for it to sting and almost kill the leather coral. After an emergency water change, I threw out the dead base of the coral. The top half still seems to be doing somewhat well. Is there any chance of salvaging it, or is it a lost cause?

According to what I've read around the net, it has a good chance of surviving. You're supposed to cut about an inch above the necrotic part and attach the good piece in an area of high waterflow. Also run carbon and skim aggressively. I think I also read something about Vitamin supplements but I'll have to doublecheck.

You're in effect just making a rather large frag.

Anthony Calfo has a great book on coral propagation. I would suggest going out and purchasing a copy today if possible.
