lighting for 125

I am about to buy a 125 gallon tank from my brother (great price!!) I was wondering what would be the best way to light it. It is the same height as my 55 so i was wondering if power compacts would do the job. If so how many would i need? I am going to leave it freshwater for a while until i can get the money to convert it. So i am just wondering what i need to look at for lighting.

If that's the case you may want to have this post moved to the FW forum for better advice on that. If you are being pro-active for the eventual transformation over to SW, then the type of light needed would greatly depend on the types of corals you wish to keep. The post can always be moved if not.

Any idea's on corals yet?

Cheers
Steve

I would like to keep soft corals mostly. I am just going to leave freshwater for a while and was asking about the type of lighting for the saltwater. I just need an idea of how much i am going to have to spend

I am not familiar with the dimensions of the 55 or the 125 but I am guessing it's 72" long? If so you should be fine with a 4x165w VHO or 6x96w PC set up. Both will do well for soft and LPS corals providing the tank is >24" deep.

Cheers
Steve
