Live sand

I have a question....is it possible to go to the ocean and scoop up some live sand out of the ocean and put it into your tank? If so what is the process that you would have to go through to do it right?

You could get sand from the ocean, however it would be wise to get it from 1/2 mile or so offshore. Beach sand and sand near beaches would have a lot of dirt and contamination in it. You would get the bateria with the sand but as far as the detrivores, if its sand from the North/Mid Atlantic, they may not be able to take the tropical temps in reef tank. HTH
