Macroalgae is typically used as a food source for herbivores, decoration and nutrient control, it can also serve as a sort of in-tank refugium. There is no need to put it in your tank, but it can benefit your system, dependin on the type of macroalgae used. It can also become as big a pest as hair algae if left unchecked with some caulerpa species.
