magnesium

I am trying to understand the importance of magnesium. I have read a couple online links but still hazy. I am testing and understand my calcium(440 ppm) and alkalinity(8.5) which is good. So what will dosing magnesium really help do?

If your cal and alk are good you need not bother about mag. You only check mag if you have a problem with calc.

Mag keeps the calc and alk from all combining and precipitating out. Do some YouTube searches for alk and calc as well as bulk reef supply, they have a great video that explains it.

You mag should be approximately, 3 times you calcium for balance
