If the mandarin was thin it was starving. That's the first sign they are dying. Mandarins should be nice and fat in the middle.
Pods eat detritus in the tank. Many are very small and hard to see with the naked eye. Take a close look at a mandarin's mouth. Anything it eats needs to fit in that tiny opening.

We brought one of them to the store today and fed their morray eel with it. Should have seen how fast he gobbled it down. That'll show him!
