Ok i went to my lfs today to pick up a mandarin goby. We got it and got to the counter and noticed a very thick stringy stuff almost like snot coming out of its gills. What the heck is this? I didn't purchase it they said they were going to hold it for a couple days to te how it does and to see if i could figure out what it is. Anyone have any idea?

Without actually seeing it. or a good pic...it's hard to speculate. Mandarins will produce excessive slime when under stress, and it could simply be that.

mandarins are cool fish, hope ya got a smoking refgium tho. They can rip a pod population to zero quickly. I would get one if i have enough pods for it.

yea all mandarins have that slime which comes off easy when caught in nets ! no need for worry !!

I have had my Mandarin for about eight months and he seems to eat live shrimp. He spends most of his day picking at the live rock, maybe eating pods. Are these creatures visible to the naked eye? I do not have a refugium, should I consider adding live pods to my existing environment?

BTW He does slime himself if he gets nervous.

yea pods are visible to the naked eye (unless ya eyes are as bad as mine hehe) !! for eight months and ya dont see his bones then he's getting something for sure !! if he's looking real skinny then your in real need for some type of pods for him asap !! i would add pods just to boost your system imo cant hurt anything !!!

when you say live shrimp what ya talkin about live brine??

He has grown a little and looks healthy, no bones. I have been feeding him live brine. Occasionally I have seen him eat chunks of formula 2 and Thera+A. Can I buy pods online? I don't think my LFS sells these creatures.

normally an hungry mandi will have a long sharp bone that run the length of their bodiies that will show badly !!! which they can live quite long with out a good diet !! my first lasted like 6 months and then died !!
yea ya can buy pods online and or ask a local reefer to give ya a cup of sand/pods off the glass !! or if ya in good with ya lfs ask them for a cup of sand gravel or if ya need more live rock get some ya should get plenty of pods !! or here some links
