Mandarin goby

I found a mandarin goby at the LFS, and just have to have him. Just don't know anything about these guys. What does he require that is different from other fish. Right now I have a percula clown, pygmy angel, and a cleaner shrimp. Any info would be appreciated.

What size tank?

How long has yoru tank been up?

Mandarin goby's do very poor in small tanks and tanks that are young because they often will never accept prepaired foods and will end up starving todeath once they have wiped out their natural food source. If you can supply them with a constant food source (pods) then they will do ok.

My tank is fairly new. I have had it up about four months, and it is a 55 gallon. Right now I don't have live rock but have been talking about getting some. If I bought it and the goby would that work or does the rock need to be in there a while. Also pods, is that something that just the rocks can produce or is that something I can buy to feed him. I am very new at this so I don't know. Thanks for the help

I would highly recommend you do not purchase this Mandarin. In a tank that is that new and does not have much love rock I would bet he would not make it 3 months. Please leave this fish to someone with a larger more mature tank. Take a look at scooter blennies, very similar and easier to care for.

you would need a lot of rock in there by itself for awhile so that the pods could have time to reproduce without being eaten you can buy pods online in kits to help seed and jump start your population it also helps to have a sump where there are no predators eating them...if you have a sump buy lots of rock give it plenty of time get some sand from others tanks that is full of live order a pod kit then i think the mandarin would be fine.I have special rocks that i rotate between the sump and the tank...hth

Alrmc4, great idea about rotating some live rock. I did it a couple of times and suprise the pods by placing the rock back into the main tank.

Ive got a Mothers Sailfin Dragonet, ever heard of one of these? It was sold to me as a scooter blenny. He eats pods all day and night also eats prepared foods!
