Mantis Shrimp on TV

Our friend the mantis shrimp is a TV star. ABC news had about a 2 minute spot on the mantis last night, crowning it the planet's best power puncher. In the way that only TV can, they basically theorized that a mantis the size of a human would kick any Olympic boxer's butt since it would pack the power of one of the USS Missouri's 16 inch guns (really). Most interesting to me though, was a UC Berkeley marine biologist's statement that one once broke the glass on his aquarium. Hmmmm.

do mantis shrimp really break glass? i have been told that was an old wives tale

I have head of them breaking glass or cracking the tank, but I have never seen it myself.

i supose they could break the glass, ive seen them shatter a heater

I dont know anyone who has personally experienced this, but it could be because most mantis' are removed before becoming large enough to do so.

The glass on a heater is generally more fragile (much thinner) than that of the tank.
