Maxi Reef Trickle filter

OK now I realize I have to get rid of the Bioballs in my trickle filter.Question is what to replace them with?? System consists of 54 corner bow tank with Maxireef trickle filter/heater and Remora c skimmer in sump part of the filter ,it is quite small due to limited space under stand.Do I replace bioballs with live rubblerock w or without substrate and raise water height/ Do I place substrate few inches and try to grow macro/w light/Do I leave empty and skim off detritis?In near future I want to make a refugium above tank so take this into consideration.Your help greatly appreciated in advance.Thank you!

Replace it with Live Rock rubble.....

Rev is right. Just make sure the lr rubble is submerged completely.

Some LFS sell LR rubble for pretty cheap. Others give it away, if you ask. When they get LR shipments in just ask them if you can have the rubble pieces that they throw away.

Thanks Guys! I have 40# Key Rock comming tomorrow to start tank!Just wasnt sure about how to set up sump area.

personally my bio balls haven't failed me yet but if you want to get lr rubble i'd do it too.
