metal halide / hps

a thought just occurred to me coming home from a 12 hour shift i saw the mh parking lot lights on the way to my apartment,
could these lights be used for a tank ?
i just checked hd and they are a 70 watt unit.
there are also 400 watt units too.
and they are sealed behind a tempered lens cover.
they look like they could work.
any comments?

what about the high pressure sodium lamps.
i dont know aout them too much .
they look like they will put out too much light in the red section of the light spectrum.

just curious

The spectrum of light emitted from these commercial lamps are too low. You would have a very yellow light which could encourage algae growth.

Not sure about HPS. I don't think I have ever seen a tank running one of these bulbs. For High Intensity Discharge, its mostly Metal Halide or Mercury Vapor.
