Munching on hair algae

I have a small outbreak of hair algae in my display tank. The last week I have noticed little white pointed snail shaped critters in the algae. Tonight I looked with a flashlight and indeed the look like tiny snails. They are only in the hair and they are going to town. Tank has been established for over two years. How come I haven't seen this before?
