New filter. What to do?

I got a new canister filter to replace my HOB and i was wondering how long i should leave both running before completely shutting down my HOB? Or of i would be safe just shutting it down now?

I'd leave it for about a month then take some of the media out of the HOB and leave it running for another week or two. There's no penalty for taking even longer of course.
