no crabs = more pods?

If i was to take all of the hermit crabs out of my tank, probably 15 or so, would my pop popoulation grow large enough to take the place of the hermits?

Probabley not completely. The crabs do more than the pods would be capable of in terms of what gets consumed. As far as left over foods and detritus, they would make a decent dent though.

Cheers

Remember that the population will be controled not only by the level of preditors but also by the amount of food. Eventually there will be established an equilbribum rate where the pods only exists in numbers that the food sources can sustain them. This does not mean that they are consuming all of the detrius.

I would rely on nassarius quite a bit for detritus and uneaten foods. Mabye a single fighting conch. Algae snails should be able to take care of the rest as long as the water quality is in check. It's pretty easy to have a "clawless" tank as long as there is the right mix of critters. A banded serpent or non-green brittle would also help keep the surface substrate clean.

Cheers

I wouldn't, they get to big and they would compete too heavily for the same food sources. Conch's are quite the eating machines. A few nassarius would be a better option if you think the star and conch are not keeping up.

Cheers
