open top with eggcrate? why the eggcrate?

Why do some people say you need eggcrate if you decide to go open top for your aquarium?

just curious what the eggcrate is for.........

So your fish whacks it head on the eggcrate when it tries to jump out instead of ending up on the floor.

It does cut down your light big time I found out. I ditched the egg crate quickly.

Glass, but I only cover about 3/4 of the top and leave space for air movement.
