Painting Canopy/Stand

Any painting pros out there? When I bought my tank it had a small scratch on the top of the canopy, so I picked up a mini roller and 1 quart of gloss black paint. I painted over the original paint, but it came out 'rough', it is not smooth as before. Did I use the wrong paint or should I have used spray paint? If anyone has painting tips, it would help.

what you need to do trigger is sand the area your painting, then paint it usually paint wont stick very well to other and will make it rough
