I am thinking of painting my tank stand and was wondering if the paint fumes would somehow affect the water quality in my tank.

What sort of paint? If spray - I would think yes - it would affect the water. If latex - shouldn't be a problem.

oh no, definatly not spray paint. I was going to use a brush or roller with latex interior paint.

Yeah I would recommend a nice wood stain, and then a sealant that is water resistant. I stained my tank myself and loved the way it looked. But after only a few weeks, I kept dripping water on the front ledge and now I have a few water stains that seem like they'll only get worse. To be safe, I would keep the windows open when drying ( assuming it's not freezing where you live). You should be fine, just as long as you don't spill any into the tank. HTH!
