PC actinics vs VHO

Hi everyone I'm back with mroe questions in this early morning! If I go the PC route of power compacts (getting two 03 actinics) it would be A LOT cheaper becaue I have a ballast that could support the two bulbs, but if I went the vho route, I would have to get a new ballast. The actinics will be supporting a 250 metal halide at 10,000K (by XM). Do you guys think it would be okay to use the PC actinics or will it just not do in your opinion?

PC actinics are fine as long as you get the true 03 actinics and not the 7100k blue tubes that are called actinics. The 7100k tubes look like crap compared to VHO and true 03 PC'S IMO.

I agree with Darin 100%. If i have learned anything in my quest for aquatic knowledge it is lighting. PCs will do just wonderfully supporting MH. To my understanding PCs actually penetrate deeper than VHOs anyway. But the true 03 is a very pretty blue. The difference as far as effectiveness goes between the blue and the 03 I am unsure. Also just as a side note I saw the ushio 20K in action this last weekend and while not as intense as the 10K it is also very blue. With a tank your size the 20K even with the lesser intensity would be an option I would consider. I like the blue of the 20K!

I agree with this. It has been theorized in the past the VHO actinic was more intense than PC, but my guess is that those PC's were of the 7100k variety instead of true 03's. I haven't heard any more about that since the actinic 03 PC's became readily available.

Okay cool, I was thinking about getting the XM 20,000K but decided against it because I am already going to supplement the halide with actinics, so adding more blue to an already very blue tank (if I were to use the 20,000K) would seem a bit wierd looking IMO. 10K's are more intense scientifically, than the 20,000K, it penetrates more. Not to mention the biggest killer of the 20,000K bulb is that its PAR value if extremely dimished compared to the 10,000K (based on http://www.cnidarianreef.com/lamps.cfm ). Thanks again guys I appreciate the info and good news!
