Baking soda raises pH, but only to a certain point I believe.

Yes but it's affect only last a couple of hours, I've had to do it once on my 55 gallon.

Why were you going to use it if your pH was fine?

Because it raises Alkalinity, raising pH is a basic side affect (when using it to raise Alkalinity). My 55 was low on alkalinity a couple of weeks ago, and the baking soda did the trick.
