i cured my live rocks in the display tank in a new set up along with the refugium. it's been two weeks and i believe the rocks are cured. the nitrate level is not bad but the phosphate level shoots up quite a bit.

my question is how effective are the macroalgaes in absorbing phosphate?

You want 0 phosphates in a tank. What type of water are you using? Tap, Ro, ro/di. Test your top off water and if you have PO4 in it thats your problem.
Have you tested for ammonia, nitrite also?

i used tap water to start and ro/di water to fill. the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate level for both sources are zero.

the phosphate level started to shoot up after i put in the uncured live rocks.
