Placement of VHO lights ??

Looking for some advice on the recommended distance from the top of the tank for placing VHO lights. These will be retrofit lights and while I have a canopy, that is 10" above the tank top. I think that is a bit too high. Thanks :?:
 
I have my PC's about 5" above... I have seen VHO's closer than that...
 
4-6 is what they usually are. Only problem with them being so close is they get in the way!
 
My PC hood sits directly on the rim of the tank. The only real drawback I find to that is the splash guard needs cleaning about every 3-4 weeks...

I agree with Darin on the 4-6 inches. If you don't have a shield between the bulbs and the water, you'll probably find that you need to remove the bulbs and clean them about once a month. The salt buildup will reduce the light a good bit if it's not wiped off occasionally. A washcloth and some white vinegar will make short work of it.
