pods ate?

When we bought our orange ricordia it came with a light brown colored really slimey but hard spot on the rock and the pods in the aquarium have been going crazy eating it for a few weeks now it is gone and the pod population has exploded. Anybody have any idea what this might have been?

Sorry, not me, my first guess would be some type of algae or decaying coral, but it's oly a guess without seeing a pic.
