Today I picked up two Penguin 550 Powerheads to increase circulation in my tank. The LFS also sold me some big black pre-filter media and stands, to cover the intakes. I realize that these will act as a bio filter, but are they necessary. This setup makes the power heads twice the size of just the power head. What do people typically use if anything to cover the intakes?

i dont have anything coving mine but i have a LOT of bio filtration so i dont really need the extra

An intake guard is a good thing to have as some fish have a tendancy to get sucked into the ph intake and the pressure is to great and they cant break away. Other inverts like snails and anenomes will suffer problems aswell potentaly.

There is a post in the DIY forum about how you can make your own intake guard.
