Powerhead noise

I just got 2 maxi-jet powerheads.
One of them is silent; I can barely even hear a hum.
However, the other is quit noisy.
They both have the venturi removed.

Do I just need to be patient and they just need
to adjust, or should I return the noisy one
before it is too late?

Make sure all the parts are seated firmly, and that it isn't touching something else that could be vibrating like part of the hood or HOB or something. Otherwise the only moving part in the whole PH is the impeller. Its easy to take apart and make sure the impeller is seated okay. If that all checks out I would take it back.

I confirm with Jackdp's suggestions.

If you take the PH and just dangle it in the tank so its not touching any surface other than the water and its still making a noise try to take the bottom part off (afer its unplugged). You should be able to rotate the bottom part till it pulls apart and the impeller might be broke or might not be seated properly.

This is also how you can clean the powerheads to keep them working at peak efficency.
