what exactly are they i already have a flter i just dont know what a powerhead is and if i need one or not im running a 90 gallon with decorative rock and i have never done this before with saltwater what the heck is a powerhead? i appreciate it

A power head is used to move water. It provides flow and currents within the closed system in a tank. Dead (still) water in a tank is a good place for unwanted algae to start and spread. For a FO setup it is recommended to have at least 10x the flow of the tank capacity and a reef should have 20x or more. HTH

You can use them to boost water flow in your tank to generate currents or boost an undergravel system. I'd recommend a couple for your tank placed at opposite ends to give plenty of current flow to avoid dead areas on your substrate.
