protein skimmer 20 gallon

i have a 20 gallon saltwater tank and a friend of mine is willing to give me this skimmer. it is rated for upto 200 gallon and my tank is only 20 gallon you think it will be kay in my tank or is it a overkill and may cause be problem in the long run please advise thanks

IMO, a protein skimmer is not needed on a 20 gal. I have 3 reefs, all 20 and under. Bi weekly PWCs are all you need on a tank that size, and of course, monitor the water parameters. Other than that... I think skimming a 20 is a waste of time.

You can use it, but it's not necessary and it's taking up space, just do what nanoluvr suggestion, Biweekly PWCs is enuf to control the "dirt". I put on a skimmer on my 28 and I took it off cause it's too crammed for such a small tank and it's not necessary.

I agree that it`s not really needed. Weekly PWC`s will do the same.
