On my 10g nano, I'd like to add some macro, but do not have room for a fuge. Would putting the chaeto directly in the tank be ok?

Since the 10g is a fowlr, I only have normal fluorescents on the tank (15w). Would the chaeto be ok?

I don't know if that's going to be enough light for chaeto, but since its your only option it's worth a shot. Chaeto's a decent choice cuz it won't grow super fast, it stays in a nice clump, and unlike calupra won't go sexual and release toxins into your tank.
good luck!

Will it die without enough light?

Also, is the growth of the algae directly related to nutrient absorption? Meaning, if the algae doesn't really grow, then it is not really exporting much nutrients.

I wuld think your lighting will be ok. Might not grow as fast but it will grow. I have been told that cheato does not need much light.

Not sure on the second question...
