I'll let them run in for a few weeks. I haven't run carbon for some time, but my water is very clear to the naked eye. And the glass is always clean. Even the back 8)

So, is there anything wrong with keeping the lights 4" above the water rather than the typical 8-9"? I assume this is for the heat issue...

More of a possibility of water getting on a hot bulb and causing it to shatter..

if you look into the aquarium length wise you should be able to see the yellowish tint from the water.. You can also empty some owater into a white bucket and see the yellowish water if it is indeed yellowish..
