Question from a friend

I received these questions via e-mail from a friend...any help will be appriciated. p.s. I already asked her to get some pictures.

Okay something is happening in my tank, any ideas? Recently my sinularia's
tips went 'bald', no polyps, it seemed to have went back to normal but now
it is getting worse, it is not just the tips now but whole 'fingers'

ALSO I have been getting this algae type thing in my 45g only, I thought it
was HA but not now, during the day there are little brownish strands that
seem to grow 'up' off everything, sand, corals, rock, off the spaghetti
algae clump, and snails. When I blast it, it rises to the top of the tank,
usually suspened by air bubbles that are attached to it....any ideas!? This
by the way is not happening to the anemone's tank... is it just a phase my
tank is going thru ( my hopes and suspicions).. I really do not remember
going thru it before, then again I do not remember the pains during
childbirth but I am POSITIVE that happened!

For a little background the tank is about 5 mo old 45g, DSB and LR home to a
yellow tang, rainford gobies and orchid dottyback, pair of cleaner shrimp
and a clam.... I have a few softies , a pocillipora, a gorgonian, a
hydnaphora and a colony of star polyps, and what I think is an Agaraicia...
the sales person thought it was a Pavona..Anyway...

I have 6.5 wts/gal from 10k and actinic PC's, a Prism Skimmer... I recently
added a 20g tub for a soon to be algae refugium but for now it houses LR
and a neon gobie, lit with a 2-20w bulbs... a sump that also houses some
calupera, a tray of sand with some algae and a tray of cushed coral holding
rubble lit by a gro and sho light stick....my tube anemone tank is plumbed
into this system also, it has a sm colony of calupera, few pcs of LR and lit
by a 15w 50/50 bulb......

The SG is 1.024, pH is 8.4, NO3 is like 5ppm and Phos is non detect......my
Ca is now at 320 after a low of 290 ( I am raising it by +/-20 ppm/day with
Kents Liquid Ca , my alk is 2.1 meq or 5.8 dKH....
My water has silica (silica filter has problably not been performing for
several months..) but recently, the last 2-3 wks I have been bring home DI
water from work to make salt and for top off......

I just ran some carbon this week, could it have removed that much orgaincs
to have 'scalded' the sinularia? I also just put in some PhosBan today but
again that registered ND and I am 99% sure when I test it at work for org.
and inorg. P that it will be the same..... I just had it tested about a
month ago and that was the case

Not sure if there is any other clues you might need- let me know... or if
I supplied you with more than enough info, sorry BUT if you have any idea
what I have happening to the sinularia let me know AND what this
algae/bateria or whatever is an how do I get rid of it..???

thnaks again

Mike

Could be shedding, how long has she had it?

a Prism Skimmer...
Needs a bigger/better skimmer.

Nitrate factory going on here.

My intitial thoughts...Hasn't been using purified water, the nutrients are high and because of the algae in the system they are not registering on the test kits. Tell them next time they do a PO4 test to stick a syringe into the sandbed and draw the water from there, see if the sandbed is binding (and subsequently releasing) PO4.

they have a puter...tell them to sign up, it is very difficult to advise through a third party.
