quick ? about mixing IO salt

do i have to wait the 24 hours for it to fully mix like i do w/oceanic? i finally got fed up w/oceanic and switched to IO on saturday. I've been letting it go the full 24 hours, but i need to do a water change today, but i havent got the water mixed yet, so i'll prolly do it tomorrow unless i could just do it later tonight.

Follow the mfg's instructions. Most mixes (including IO, Oceanic and Reef Crystals (I use all 3)) do say it can be used immediatly after mixing. However common sense and experience (And the mfgs instructions) dictates that in order for the new mix to stabilize you will want to let it mix for about 24 hours. This gives everything a chance to dissolve and PH, buffers, etc to become stable. In small quantities I have found it doesnt hurt to mix and then wc (ex I change 5g in my 75g, I have no negative affects from mixing and then wc right away) In larger wc's you should always match ph, sg and temp to avoid sending your critters into a state of shock and possibly death.

Peace.

ya i wasnt gonna add it right away, i was gonna wait about 10/12 hours. I know on the io bag it says just to let it stabilize, but it doesnt say how long that is lol.

thanks!

Why did you get fed up with Oceanic?

mostly cause of the pH. I've tried everything that has to do w/gas exchange and still no rise, so i switched to IO and nw its up to 8.1...it was down to 7.7.

also, the stuff wouldnt mix very will..even right out of a just opened jug, it was already clumpy, even tho the jug was sealed (i'm guessing thats due to moisture in there)

At least the first of the 3 bags of IO i opened was perfect as far as mixing and no clumps, plus it seems clearer than the oceanic.

I've done immediate mixing and water changes before, in small quantities, with no ill effects. But also agree that you should let it stabalize. 24 hours ideally, or as long as is possible.

sir_dudeguy, do you still have the canopy? That is more than likely the culprit of your pH problems. I had a canopy and when I removed it, my pH rose. I found it hard to get really good gas exchange because the lid didn't allow it.....

no..never did have a canopy. I've had open top for about 2 or 3 months now, and i still wasnt getting a higher pH. The day after i did my pwc w/IO my pH was back up.
