Were expecting rain and I was interested in catching it and using it as top off water considering rain is the oceans natural top off. Any advice?

Do not use it. There are impurities in rain water. Just stick to rodi.
+1. for instance, its possible that if the rainwater contacts any bare copper, it could possibly carry that over into your tank. the chances of it actually happening are prob pretty slim, but still.

Rain water accumulates any impurities in the air as it falls. Plus whatever you're catching it in will accumulate dust, debris, etc etc. it is "pure" enough to drink but not for your fish tank. The ocean is large enough to keep those levels diluted enough to be safe.
