Is there any reason why i can't have like a reef with areas covered in plants and such?

No, not at all. I like the look of green in the reef. Many people prefer to utilize there main display space for corals and place there macros in a sump still using the benefits of its phosphate removal.

Depends on what fish also as some of them will forage on the green
