Other than a sump or refugium, what other methods are used for cleaning the excess nitrate? As well as providing essential vitamins or elements!

Ro/Di unit, skimmer, LR, LS and water changes. Maybe a few more but the salt work has been awoke for me. A good reef test kit so you know what you need to dose as far as minerals goes.
 
Algae scrubber all the way! Brought my nitrates down to 20-30 in two months from 100 and keeps them there. They don't rise. When I do a water change they fall more and don't rise back up.
