I have a 10 gallon tank lying around that i want to turn into a refugium. its purpose is to grow plants/macroalgae for nitrate reduction and to be a pod farm.

It will have an intake, then a set of baffles, then the space for the refuge, one more set of baffles, then the return pump. is this good, or should i do another setup? also some other questions....

1. i want to put the powerhead that is connected to my chiller in there. where should this be placed, if at all. (will it kill the pods?)

2. what kind of substrate or other stuff should i put in the refuge part? sand, LR rubble, ....?

3. what kind of light should i use?

4. how strong of a pump should i use for the return? is a mag 5 good? it will be around a 4' travel.

5. is a 1200 GPH overflow too much for a 10 gal. ref? should i go down to 600?

thanks for any advice!

A 10 gallon is way to small for everything you want to do. It would make a decent sump or a refugium, but not both.

Do you have room under the tank for a 20 gallon long, or maybe even a 29 gallon?
