Refuguim flow rate

Fast enough that you don't have stagnant water in the sump.
 
I try to match the flow threw the sump with my skimmer the skimmer pumps 500 gph so thats what i shoot for
 
I agree with the two gentlemen before me. There is no need for "contact time". Algae will pull nutrients from the water as fast as it does, regardless how much flow is rushing through or not.

Not for algae, contact time only applies to UV sterilizers and the bubbles in your skimmer. As mentioned, the algae will absorb the nutrients no matter the flow rate.
 
Whatever grows in the algae scrubber, over the years it has changed. Chaeto mostly and a type of bubble algae. It all exports organics and goes into the compost heap.
