after much reading i've decided to add about 4"of southdown to my existing 1 1/2" of live sand. should i try to mix it all up in the tank, or add the new over the old, or the old over the new, or what?

You can add it on top, or with such a small amount you can mix it up. However, you don't want to add more tha 1/2" per day/every other day, to allow any fauna to migrate to the upper levels. Also,, seeing your in Ft Lauderdale, your going to have a devil of a time finding SD. If you'd like I can get you the name of the source, in Ft Meyers, they will sell it to you for 20.00 per ton ;)

Sorry, it is not Ft Meyers, it is Ft Pierce ;)
