(1) I live in South Florida, can I use seawater in my aquarium?
If you are away from an inlet and can get a few miles offshore to get it, yes you can use seawater. You will have to store it fo
a few weeks before using it, and will have to siphon off the topwater from the dead organisms, check ph
, etc... before use, hmmm really a hassle compared to mixing salt and water..., but to answer, yes you can use seawater.
(2) Why would I need a skimmer? I only intend to keep fish.
a skimmer is not absolutely neccessary in a FO
tank, and also not absolutely neccessary in Reef tanks either. Skimmers are used for getting DOC
's out of the water column so that compounds such as NO3
are not produced as rapidly... There are those who use them religiously, and those who won't have them. I believe the larger the tank, the more of a need for a skimmer. This is because water changes become more and more cumbersome as the tank gets larger....On a 5gal to 75gal tank, you could keep up with water changes so that DOC
's are kept at minimum... On larger tanks, it would take massive water changes to keep up with it..thus needing a skimmer to aid... Of course this too depends on bio-load and feeding habits, as to how frequent and large the water changes/ use of skimmer is needed...
