shedding rock?

This may sound like a dumb question but we have around 100lbs of lr in our tank reds,purples,greens and white. One rock looks like someone dumped a liquid purple hardening shell all over it. It apears that this rock is sheding like a snake. Anybody ever seen that before?

Well hopefully it was not painted purple. Its probably the upper layers of corline dieing off for some reason. Maybe lower light than it needs, maybe shock from water condition changes.
