Should I wash activated carbon?

You should definately rince it first for at leats 1 min. GAC has a lot of dust, and you dont want that in your tank making it look dirty.
 
But will the 1 min tap water rinse causes the activated carbon to be clog by heavy metals and reduces the life of activated carbon?
 
Exactly...I agree 100%. You will notice though, that the better the grade of carbon you buy, the less dust there will be.
 
The 1 or 2 minute rinse will not seriouly affect the life of the GAC

Exactly. Don't worry about this. It probably affects the life of the carbon by about .00555 minutes or something like that...

I rinse my Chemi-pure for 1-2 minutes under cold tap water and then soak it in RO-DI water for about 1-2 hours and this still leaves a carbon film in parts of my sump.
 
I rinse my carbon before I put it in my canister filter. Never have had any problems with the dust...
