Skimmer base

Out of what can I make a base to raise my skimmer a few inches from the bottom of my sump? My husband suggested he can make one made out of crate material but I wasn't sure if the plastic can release anything bad that can b bad for reef/ fish

What are your thoughts?

just use some pvc pipe and egg crate
