Good idea to always keep GAC on hand for extra cleaning power and remove impurities from the water. You want to place it in an area of hight flow to force water through it.
Personally I use Boyd's Chei-Pure Elite in my sump between the baffles. If you have a cannister filter it should go in one of the compartments.

GAC should be be changed frequently.

all i can think is the sump. I have a wet and dry filter, but i am not running the first sponge that goes on top of the bioball maybe i can put it there.
