Sponge

I have a sponge growing out from one of my rocks. It is growing toward my Galaxia. Can I just cut the sponge back or will it damage it?

Looks more like a finger leahter to me. But I am not sure about cutting it back. I believe you can trim some of the fingers back but dont take my word for it I;m not exactlly sure. But nice galaxia.
