I put a sand starfish in my tank today. I haven't seen it since. Do they like to hide?

I wouldn't say they like to hide, more like they get in places where its hard to find them.

Sandsifting stars actually burrow beneath the substrate and it is quite common to not see them at all during the day. Check at night after the tank lights have been off for a bit, you should see it then...
