I agree on the serpent star. I've had mine for like 6 months and he's really cool when I can watch him. perfect star for a starter tank in my opinion.
 
Yep. If you must have a star then thats the one to get.

When I feed my tank pellets he will come out and fan his legs out and suction up the pellets. He then rolls the leg up to his mouth to actually feed. It's really neat! I just have a grey one but the red ones look nice too.
 
I have had a Black Banded Brittle Star for almost 2 years now and he has gotten HUGE! He started out the size of a golf ball with all his legs out stretched, now he is about the size of a dinner plate! For me, the brittles are the way to go. They don't munch on corals and they are a great cleaner of any left over foods. They are very hardy.
 
My red serpent from my old (sigh) tank...

It was really a lot more red than the pics look.
