I could not find any plastic mesh around here. I did have an old sheet of acrylic that I cut to size and roughed up, it is so rough it will poke holes in your skin. Would this suffice? What should be the gap on either side of the acrylic(the open area of the slit in the pipe)?

have you checked walmart? check in the crafts section. they have sheets of stuff there that would work for this application. it's the stuff that i sectioned off this hex tank with-
