FYI

Chicken scratch is crushed oyster shell, 3/8" and smaller. It's available at any farmer's market, and is about $10 per 50 pound bag. It's dusty, so would need rinsed before using.

Chickens eat it to aid in digestion. It's also used as a catalyst in corn burners... I learned about it from a guy that uses a corn burner to heat his house.

I'm not using it as substrate and don't plan to. This is just an FYI, so do your own research.
