I know I just can't do that. I really wish I could. Would the remove the top half pwc remove the bottom pwc idea work? I would be sure to remove the water with te sand do the minimal amount of gas is released.

It should last at least a while especially for a cortez which get an average overall length of only 13.3-14 in. Could I do that thing with the substrate remove pwc remove pwc?

Yes. and it seems that the longer the sand has been in the tank the more danger there is, like if the sand is only 3 months old it probably not as dangerous and disturbing sand thats 3 years old.

I see. It's under a year old, I know that. If I did a 35% change while removing the water and sand at the same time would that work? Since the sand is under a year old.
