Sump!?!?!?

Can somebody please explain the purpose of a sump!!! I know it looks like a little tank with carbon balls in it, but what the hell is it's purpose??? Can someone please explain it so that a 10 year old can understand what it's for PLEASE!!! How important is it? Do I really need one? Why are they so freakin expensive???
