I recently purchased a 120 gallon reef ready tank. It came with a stand and 29 gallon sump. Is this a good size sump? Almost seems too small.

It depends. If that was all that was able to be fit in the stand than that was the best that could be done. The key is big as possible. I've even known people to have sump systems larger than the actual display tank itself. If you can get a bigger body of water in the stand, I would go that route personally.

It's the 48 inch version, so it's very wide front to back(23-24"). I might sell the sump and get a 40B

Sounds like a good plan to me. Bigger sump means more or better equipment for a tank that size. I'm not even sure how a skimmer for a tank that size would fit into a small sump, but if it worked for them power to them.
