I have a 55 gallon tank and was planning to set up a 20 gallon sump... How much gallons per second should i get for the return pump?

Well i would say the more the better although you dont want to over do it either...Using flex hose for the return hose i would say you would want the tank to turn over at least 5 times an hour so depending on how far up the water has to go and if your going to have corals you want a pump that pumps i would say around about what a rio 2100-3100 pump or a mag 5. Mag drives are considered better pumps but to be honest i have both on my 125 gallon and i would say i like the rios a little more...for the $$ HTH

Do you have any other source of water flow in the tank? A FO or FOWLR setup requires flow at least 10x an hour turnover. The reef tank should be around 20x an hour. Once you figure how much flow you will need figure in your head height and choose the pump that fits the flow needed.
